1. What is Hinduism?
In the language of ancient Persians, the letter ‘S’ was often transformed into ‘H’. Thus they called the land of the Sindhu river Hindushan or Hindudesha, its people Hindus, and their religion Hinduism. From this perspective, all religions originating in India—whether Jainism, Buddhism, or Sikhism—appear as different forms of the same Hinduism. Generally, however, the religion based on the Vedas and practised by the Aryans is defined as Hinduism. In Hindu tradition, this religion is more appropriately called ‘Sanatana Dharma’—the eternal religion that holds ancient and everlasting values. The word ‘Dharma’ means ‘that which upholds’. In the ultimate analysis, Dharma refers to God Himself.
Page 2
2. Who founded this religion and when?
First, the difference between Hinduism and other religions is that no particular God-inspired person founded it, nor did it originate for any particular purpose in human history. This religion stands on the countless sages, saints, and seers whose profound intuitive feelings and spiritual realizations qualify each of them as God-inspired. This is a unique feature of Hinduism. Like the river Ganges, its stream of tradition has flowed for thousands of years. That is why this religion is called ‘Sanatana Dharma’.

3. What are the main scriptures of Hinduism? Is it possible to summarize their contents?
The main scripture of Hinduism is the Veda. The word ‘Veda’ literally means knowledge. Other common names of the Veda are—Pratya, Agama, and Nigama. By the grace of the Supreme, the Vedas arose spontaneously in the deep hearts of the sages; hence the Vedas are called ‘Apaurusheya’—that which is not man-made. There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.

4. Many hold misconceptions about Yajna (sacrifice). Is it possible to give a rational explanation of the objections they raise?
To live happily and peacefully on earth, we must adopt mutual cooperation. According to Hindu belief, ‘earth’ does not refer only to humans. The animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, and all other aspects of nature are included. Each of these divisions and powers of nature has a conscious controller—these are called Devatas (gods). Yajna (sacrifice) is performed to please these Devatas. Thus, when humans and Devatas mutually nourish and satisfy each other, the whole world is satisfied—this is the underlying meaning of Vedic Yajna.
Page 5
5. Are there other scriptures besides the Vedas that are accepted as authoritative?
In Hinduism, countless books are regarded as scriptures. Among them, a few main texts are the traditional Smritis and are respected by almost all communities. These are: the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, the Smritis composed by sages like Manu, and the Agamas, Puranas, and Darshanas. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata have inspired Hindus for thousands of years in facing life’s various problems.
Page 6
6. Belief in God is a common feature of almost all religions. According to Hinduism, what is the nature of God?
God is one—Ekamevadvitiyam. He is Sat-Chit-Ananda, i.e., His nature is eternal existence, consciousness, and bliss. He is the Lord of this universe. By His own power, remaining within Himself, He alone creates, alone preserves, and finally withdraws everything into Himself. He is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. Above all, His compassion for the bound soul is His chief characteristic.
Page 7
7. If Hindus truly believe in one God, why do they worship many deities like Shiva, Devi, Vishnu, or Ganapati?
Hinduism does accept the existence of many gods and goddesses, but it acknowledges only one unique Supreme God above all. For this reason, some of the gods and goddesses are, in a relative sense, ordinary souls like us, who in previous lives acquired extraordinary merit and thereby rose to those positions. It may be said that their position is like that of government employees. When the merit acquired is exhausted, they must relinquish their positions.
Page 8
8. Is worshipping stone, clay, or metal idols made by humans not the height of foolishness?
Many raise this objection, and it is raised without properly understanding the profound spiritual idea underlying image worship. No Hindu worships these images thinking they are God Himself. The image is inert matter, but it reminds us of the conscious, living God. Who does not, upon seeing a photograph, remember the living, conscious person?
Page 9
9. The prevailing practice is to install deities in temples—millions of Hindus go to these temples to offer worship. What is its rationale?
God exists, He is the sustainer and controller; by His grace we receive happiness and peace. If we accept that such a God exists, then it is essential to have an easy means of reaching and pleasing Him. The temple is that means. When God descends to this earth for our welfare, the house we build thinking He will reside there is the temple.
Page 10
10. Whether in a temple or at home, what is worship (Puja)? Is there a specific method?
Just as we lovingly serve relatives and friends, similarly lovingly serving God is worship (Puja). There are several prescribed steps and parts of Puja: Avahana, Asana-dana, Padya and Arghya, Snana or Abhisheka, Vastra, Chandanadi anulepana and Pushpa-pradana, Dhupa-prajvalana, Diparati, Naivedya, and finally Visarjana. Worship performed with faith and devotion brings peace and joy to our minds.
Page 11
11. Should not the common spoken language be used in worship instead of Sanskrit?
Worship, Homa, and other religious rituals are regarded as most sacred ceremonies. The sages who created our religious tradition handed down these rituals, their methods, and the mantras to be used. Therefore, it is most proper to follow to the letter the schedule of rituals and the language they prescribed. Moreover, according to Mantra science, the mantras used during rituals contain special power.
Page 12
12. Do non-Hindus have the right to enter Hindu temples?
Nowadays, many Hindu temples allow non-Hindus to enter. The reason is simple—if non-Hindus show the same reverence when visiting our temples as they do at their own places of worship, and remain conscious of the temple’s sanctity, then there should be no objection to their entry.
Page 13
13. Why and how should we celebrate festivals and holy days?
Observing festivals and holy days is a common part of all religions. Festivals and holy days provide this opportunity. Celebrating them brings peace and joy. At the social level, it fosters solidarity and cooperation. Thus festivals also help spread religion and culture.

14. Is pilgrimage necessary? Are there specific rules to be observed during pilgrimage?
In this routine worldly life, monotony easily arises in the daily grind. Pilgrimage refreshes our mind. God is always present, no doubt, but these pilgrimage sites make His manifestation more tangible. Hundreds of such pilgrimage sites are scattered across the country.
Page 15
15. At pilgrimage sites, Hindu pilgrims experience severe exploitation and harassment at the hands of dishonest priests. How can this be prevented?
This is a fundamental problem, or rather, it is an outward symptom of a fundamental problem. The Pandas and priests exploit and harass pilgrims for money. The cause is poverty. The lack of proper education and culture has made the matter more serious. A ‘commission’ of experts should investigate this problem deeply.
Page 16
16. Is it true that God incarnates in human form? How does this happen?
In these matters, the scriptures are our authority. In the Gita, Lord Sri Krishna declares: whenever there is a decline of Dharma and rise of Adharma, He incarnates in a body and comes down to earth. Though in His true nature He is formless, God can incarnate in a human body.
Page 17
17. What does Hinduism say about the nature of man and the purpose of human life?
According to the Upanishads, whose supreme authority is accepted by all schools of Hinduism, man is essentially the ‘Atman’ (Self). This Atman is unborn and eternal, beyond birth, decay, and death—these are only modifications of the body. The Atman is of the nature of consciousness and bliss.
Page 18
18. If that is so, why do we suffer in life? Is there no end to it?
This is called ‘Maya’, ‘Ajñana’ (ignorance), or ‘Avidya’. Because of it we forget our true nature as Atman, identify ourselves with the body, senses, and mind, and thereby suffer. But the scriptures give us this assurance: if we conduct ourselves properly under a qualified Guru, following the path prescribed by the scriptures, we can transcend Maya.
Page 19
19. Is Moksha the only goal of life? Has Hinduism rejected other purposes related to worldly life?
No. In Hindu scriptures, Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha—these four goals are prescribed for the individual. They are called Purusharthas. In the first stage of life, i.e., childhood and adolescence, one must acquire knowledge of Dharma and various worldly sciences. After being well-established in Dharma, in the second stage, i.e., youth, one may enter married life.
Page 20
20. What is Moksha? What is the experience of Moksha? How can Moksha be attained?
We know from direct experience that we are separate from the clothes we wear or the house we live in. Similarly, we are separate from our body, desires, mind, and ego. When we directly realize this truth, our inner blissful nature is fully manifested. This state is called Moksha. In this state, sorrow and suffering are completely destroyed, and after the fall of the body, there is no rebirth.

21. What is Vedanta? Does Vedanta have different schools of thought? What is the essence of the teachings of these different schools?
The word ‘Anta’ means ‘end’ or ‘essence’. The Upanishads are the concluding portion of the Vedas, and they contain the essence of the Vedas—hence they are called ‘Vedanta’. The ‘Brahma Sutras’ of sage Badarayana, the Bhagavad Gita, and other texts based on them—all are included in ‘Vedanta’.

22. The word ‘Yoga’ is commonly heard—what does it mean? How many types of Yoga are there? How should Yoga be practiced?
That which unites the individual soul with the Supreme Soul is Yoga (Yuj = to unite). Generally, Yoga is considered to be of four types: Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Karma Yoga. The main practices of Bhakti Yoga are loving God, meditating on His form, and chanting His name. Raja Yoga involves meditation on the Self, with eight steps prescribed.

23. In this connection, words like Guru, Disciple, Ishta Devata, Mantra, Pranava, Diksha, Dhyana, Japa come to mind. What do they mean?
He who removes the darkness of ignorance and gives the light of knowledge is the Guru. Without a Guru’s guidance, it is impossible to advance in spiritual life. One who is worthy of training and discipline is a disciple. The form the devotee chooses for worship and meditation is his Ishta Devata (chosen deity).

24. Is there rebirth for humans, and if so, what causes it?
Humans do have rebirth, and it is caused by ‘Karma’. In ordinary experience we see that when a part of the body is injured, the healing occurs through millions of cells. Similarly, to experience the results of all the good and bad actions we perform in one life, we need multiple lives. It seems that the doctrine of rebirth is now much more acceptable than before.

25. Is the doctrine of Karma opposed to reason? Can we not say that this doctrine has hindered the progress of Hindu society?
Karma-phala (the fruit of action) is nothing but the moral truth of the well-known proverb ‘As you sow, so shall you reap’. If there is an effect, there must be a cause. Whether good or bad, whatever we experience in this life—if its cause cannot be found within this life, then that cause must lie in a previous life.

26. This universe in which we live—how did it come into being? Do Hindu scriptures attempt to explain this?
The mystery of creation and its process, the riddle of birth and death, the problem of good and evil, the ultimate goal of human life—and many such questions have troubled humanity from time immemorial. Our sages, based on their own transcendental realizations and the indications of the Vedas, have given their conclusions. The direct result of their realization is the ‘Shad-darshana’.

27. The caste system has deep roots in Hindu society. How did it originate and what is its nature?
It seems that originally Vedic society was divided mainly into two groups: Dvija, i.e., those who had the capacity to think and act independently, and Dvijetara or Shudra, who lacked that capacity. In course of time, with the expansion of society, further divisions became inevitable. This division occurred according to differences in people’s qualities and natures.

28. Do Hindu scriptures forbid people of different castes eating together? Besides, is inter-caste marriage sanctioned by the scriptures?
In many Dharma Shastras, even for Brahmins, eating food from persons of any caste who are of pure character is permitted. Therefore Hindu scriptures certainly do not forbid eating together. Those very Dharma Shastras have accepted ‘Anuloma marriage’. So it must be accepted that inter-caste marriage is not forbidden by Hindu scriptures.

29. Untouchability is a stain on Hindu society—all thoughtful people agree. Is there any scriptural evidence in favour of this injustice?
Untouchability is universally acknowledged as a stain on Hindu society, and there is no disagreement that it must be removed. We find no sanction for this hated practice in the Vedas or Dharma Shastras. In our scriptures, in certain contexts, a kind of ‘untouchability’ has been supported for maintaining physical cleanliness and ritual purity.

30. What is the Varnashrama system? Is this practice still prevalent today?
According to the system of values Hinduism introduced, Moksha or spiritual liberation is the ultimate goal of life. Our ancient sages had extraordinary insight into human psychology. They prescribed a life-plan in which all legitimate desires are kept within healthy bounds while ample opportunity is provided for their fulfilment.
Page 31
31. What is Samskara? How many Samskaras are recorded in our scriptures? Should they be performed?
Our life is like a machine. Just as a machine’s parts must be cleaned and purified, every Hindu is expected to purify body and mind through the performance of certain rituals. The actions prescribed for this purification are called ‘Samskaras’. According to the traditional list, the number of Samskaras is sixteen.
Page 32
32. Let us not accept that through these Samskaras a person attains purity; but why does one remain impure?
According to the scriptures, a person becomes impure first due to physical suffering while in the mother’s womb, and later in life due to ignorance. Samskaras like Jatakarma remove the first type, and Upanayana and study of the scriptures remove the second type of impurity.

33. In this connection, how can the concepts of sin and merit be explained? Is there any universal principle determining right and wrong?
In almost all religions, the concepts of good and evil, sin and merit, exist. According to a widely quoted saying, doing good to others is merit, and harming others is sin. When one does a forbidden act or abandons a prescribed duty, one becomes a partaker of sin. This hinders one’s own spiritual progress and certainly harms society.

34. What status has been given to women in Hindu society? Is women’s place equal to men’s?
The status and dignity of women in Hinduism has been viewed from two angles. As a bound soul, like men, women too have Moksha as the goal of life. The moral and spiritual disciplines prescribed as means—discrimination, self-control, devotion to God, austerity—are applicable to them as well. Therefore, from this angle, women enjoy equal freedom with men.
Page 35
35. Have the various reform movements contributed to the evolution of Hinduism?
There is no doubt about this. Hinduism possesses a timeless quality—through the ages, various reform movements have protected, preserved, and strengthened it. Otherwise, like a doll made of raw clay dissolving into an indistinct mass when immersed in water, Hinduism too would have been wiped out in the storms of history.
Page 36
36. What were the main reform movements in Hinduism?
The sages of the Upanishadic age were the pioneers of all reform movements. The second reform movement was initiated by Lord Sri Krishna. He resolved all disputes about the relative superiority of Jnana, Karma, and Bhakti, and brought a wonderful harmony among these diverse spiritual practices.

37. Are our monasteries (Maths) and various religious organizations playing their expected role?
Some monasteries and religious institutions of recent times are the direct result of the latest reform movement, such as the Brahmo Samaj, Arya Samaj, and Ramakrishna Mission. The orthodox, ancient monasteries have also played important roles for the past thousand years; but it must be admitted that their contribution could have been greater.

38. What should be the ideal daily life of a Hindu?
The ideal daily routine of a Hindu may be sketched roughly as follows—rising from bed before sunrise, saluting the family deity and one’s chosen deity, then daily duties like bathing and solitary worship, meditation and scripture reading, offering food to the family deity and taking that Prasad as breakfast; then performing one’s profession and family-maintenance duties without transgressing Dharma.

39. It seems Hindu society now stands at a crossroads of history. What should we do at this juncture to build a new Hindu society?
First, we must live a virtuous life as presented in the previous section. Second, we must expand our power. Physical strength, intellectual strength, and spiritual strength—all three must be developed and harmonized into a fourfold integrated power.
Page 40
40. Finally, what should be the attitude of Hindus towards Western and other religions?
The ideal Hindu’s belief in the prescribed Dharma is the greatness of the prescribed practice of the same form—each dissolves into a unique reflection of the one unique centre, and this centre is ‘God-realization’. Sri Ramakrishna, through his unique saying ‘As many opinions, so many paths’, extended this idea much further. ‘Your Dharma is for you, my Dharma is for me’—this is one’s attitude.
